Step 4: Life on Board
Dining, entertainment, sea days and port days — how the rhythm of a cruise works.
Get First-Cruise Quotes FreeStep four is the cruise itself. After the bustle of boarding day, most first-timers are surprised how quickly they settle into a rhythm: a lazy breakfast, a port or a pool, an afternoon nap, dinner, a show. Here is how the main parts of shipboard life work.
Your Daily Program
Each evening the ship publishes the next day’s schedule, in the cruise line’s app or as a printed sheet in your cabin. It lists activities, show times, venue hours, the weather, the dress code for the evening and, on port days, the arrival time and the all-aboard time. Reading it each night is the single best habit a first-timer can form.
Dining
- Main dining room: included, with a changing menu each night. Some lines use set seating times; others let you dine any time.
- Buffet: included and open for long stretches; the easy choice on port mornings.
- Casual venues: pizza, grills and cafés, many included.
- Specialty restaurants: usually extra and worth booking early for special nights.
- Room service: available on most ships; some lines charge for it or for delivery.
Tell the line about allergies or dietary needs when you book and again when you board.

Sea Days and Port Days
| Sea day | Port day | |
|---|---|---|
| What it’s like | The ship is your destination: pools, spa, talks, trivia, shows, long lunches. | You go ashore to explore, swim, tour or shop, and return for dinner. |
| Pace | Relaxed; the busiest time is around the pool. | Early start; the ship is quiet once guests go ashore. |
| Key times | Show times and specialty dining reservations. | Arrival, first tender (if any) and the all-aboard time. |
| Tip | Try something new — a class, a talk, a deck walk. | Carry your cruise card and photo ID; check the all-aboard time twice. |
At tender ports the ship anchors offshore and small boats ferry guests to the pier. Ship tours often get priority on the tenders. For ideas in port, see our network site Shore Activities.
Entertainment, Money and Staying Connected
Entertainment
Theater shows, live music in bars and lounges, comedy, game shows and movies. Most shows are included; popular ones may need a reservation.
Your onboard account
Cruise ships are largely cashless. Purchases are charged to your cruise card or app and settled at the end. Check your running balance in the app.
Phones and Wi-Fi
Ships sell Wi-Fi packages. At sea, your phone may connect to a costly maritime network; airplane mode with Wi-Fi on avoids surprises.
Dress code
Daytime is casual. Many ships have one or more optional dressier evenings; the daily program will tell you.
